2004 IOMS Report
Ten years ago, Schuylkill Rehabilitation Center began to analyze relevant data to measure the outcomes of patients who received services. This data is kept confidential to the specific names of those persons, but identifies a variety of common characteristics, their level of function at admission, discharge and at a 90-day follow-up. This is performed to provide a fact-based, on going self-improvement mechanism for Schuylkill Rehabilitation Center.
Persons served are grouped in two programs: TRAUMA , which includes patients with diagnosis such as lumbar, cervical and sacral pain, joint and tendons injuries, muscles injuries, nerve compression syndromes (carpal tunnel), fractures and other related trauma injuries. The COMPREHENSIVE program includes patients with diagnoses such as, cerebrovascular accidents, arthritis, joint replacements, amputees, spinal cord injury, post acute head injury, other neurological illness and non-traumatic conditions.
For the year 2003 a total of 1545 patients were classified in either program. Of those, 684 patients were in the trauma program and 861 in the comprehensive program.
The patients were classified according to geographical location, age, gender, marital status, first time or return patients, educational and vocational level, employment and occupation status, diagnosis, source of payment, services provided, reason for discharge, duration of treatment in days, charges and goals accomplished.
The level of function was obtained using a prepared rating system that allows us to determine such level on admission, discharge and 90 days post discharge. Of all the stated goals by the patients, 79.6% were accomplished; the trauma group, 79.5% and the comprehensive group 79.6%.
Trauma Program
The data analyzed for the year 2003 showed that the program met the goal expectancies and 83.2% of the optimal expectancies. The objectives measured were:

- Maximize ability to return to work
- Maximize social adjustment to impairment
- Minimize use of analgesic drugs
- Maximize program completion

- Maximize independence in self-care
- Maximize social and personal adjustment to impairment/disability
- Maximize communication skills
- Maximize strength and endurance
- Maximize program completion

The efficiency of our programs, a measure of adequate use of financial resources showed a change of 8.4 for every $1000 used.
The effectiveness , a measure of the adequacy of services rendered to reach goals showed a change of 1.17 points per day of services rendered.
The patient's functional levels 90 days after discharge revealed that 69% continued to show improvements, 23% remained unchanged and 6% were below discharged level of function.
Patient satisfaction obtained after discharge utilizing twenty questions and a scale of one to seven, was rated at 6.79. Patients were also asked if they would return for treatment or suggest our facility to friends and family and 97% would make the recommendation.
